Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage is first party coverage that provides insurance benefits to the person insured under the policy for the insured’s own losses, i.e. hit and runs.

The extent of UM/UIM coverage is often wider than what insureds might think. If the insured has an auto policy with UM/UIM coverage and is hit by a driver of an uninsured motor vehicle while a pedestrian, the insured will be entitled to UM/UIM coverage from their auto policy.

It is also important to know who is or can be insured under a policy that provides UM/UIM coverage. The named insured is entitled to UM/UIM coverage as well as the insured’s family members living in the same household!
